Learning To Live Without Addiction

Your residential rehab program at Miracles Asia includes psychoeducation group sessions that are held for one hour every weekday.

Former clients also attend by zoom as part of their aftercare program where they can reinforce their knowledge as well as share their own personal wisdom and experience. You will be able to participate in this way, when you inpatient treatment has completed.

There is a magic in group work, sharing experience, reflecting back, finding balance, being aware. At the same time the sessions provide the techniques, tools and practices you can use to reverse your addiction and its corresponding unhelpful thought patterns, beliefs and behaviors.

There are 24 modules to this part of Miracles addiction treatment program and each one addresses a different aspect of addiction and recovery. These sessions are not merely educational, they are transformational!

A few examples of how psychoeducation functions and benefits you are listed below:
neuroplasticity

Neuroplasticity

Miracles’ psychoeducation program is based on neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability at any age to change its structure, function and responses to any situation, experience and environment. Patterns of thought and behaviors whether helpful or unhelpful to us, create pathways in the brain often referred to as neural pathways or neural networks.

In response to thoughts and emotions, people and places, beliefs and sensory stimuli, our brains respond by following pathways often created years or decades before. Those responses may have served us well back then and perhaps enabled us to survive. Now these patterns of thought, emotions and behavior are no longer serving us well, yet because these neural pathways are so worn-in to how we respond, we find somehow, we cannot easily change them for something better.

A life of addiction is not an ideal life for most people, yet it is difficult to effect change without outside help. During our psychoeducation program we facilitate you to literally rewire your brain to want to achieve the best for yourself in life, and for the people you care about and who care about you.

By understanding the nature of the brain, its structure, and chemical interactions and how these make you feel, you can start using the methods and knowledge we will provide you with, to modify and adapt your neural pathways to enhance the ones that serve you well and overwrite the ones that do not. In doing so your responses change and you become a different person. The person you most want to be.

Your psychoeducation sessions facilitate this by giving you knowledge of your brains structure, its chemical processes along with your mind and its activities. This awareness prepares your brain and mind to start the process of rewiring itself to live, think and feel in ways that are so rewarding to you, that they create a positive feedback loop where you want to keep growing in an increasingly happy and healthy manner.
meditation in phuket

Meditation

We will teach you meditation. Even if you have struggled to meditate in the past, we work with you to develop a technique that you feel comfortable with and is achievable for you. Meditation serves multiple purposes in your recovery. The practice of meditation quiets the minds activities and brings you to an inner state of peace and calm which is an oasis of rejuvenation within itself.

In this state you can be gently aware of the thoughts that arise in your mind that you perhaps are not consciously aware of when the mind is busy with all the subjects in its regular daily routine.

This subtle awareness of thoughts and impulses helps you to understand what is going on for you in your mind, and with time, can reveal the sources of those thoughts, beliefs, and compulsions, which then enables you to decide whether to act on them or not.

Meditation trains your mind to observe and witness its processes so that in moments of stress or anxiety your practice of meditation allows you to step back before responding, and therefore consciously act from a place of choice, rather than react instinctively according to old neural pathways that may no longer serve you. In daily life our mind is always active, it moves from one subject to the next, even when we sleep our mind is active in dreaming. If this was a physical activity it would be like continuously lifting weights at the gym for a lifetime!

Imagine if after a lifetime of lifting weights day and night, you were able to just lay down and take a break for 20 minutes, how good would that feel? How would that improve your ability to function and perform at a higher level?

The effects of meditation are profound and transformational. You will cope with, and recover from stress more quickly, anxieties will lessen, and you will feel much better within yourself at every level. People will notice because your everyday and intimate relationships will also bloom.
cognitive behavioral therapy in Thailand

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

When you are become aware of subtle emotional states and thoughts through mindfulness and meditation, you will likely become more aware of triggers that cause tension within you, which could lead to relapse or other behaviors and responses that don’t serve you well or reflect who you really are.

In Psychoeducation we teach you CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). This tool allows you to look at situations you have encountered that led to thoughts, that created uncomfortable emotional states, and which in turn led to responses or behaviors you are not proud of.

Your knowledge of CBT trains your mind to respond in different ways to situations that you have found difficult in the past, as well as deal more effectively with new ones as they occur in the future. CBT is a system that allows you to deconstruct such situations and your reactions to them, in such a way that you can see and analyze what happened for you and why you responded in a particular fashion.

This gives you the power to reframe such situations, along with your thoughts, feelings and responses in a constructive and authentic manner. With practice, your new and healthy responses to difficult situations overwrite the ones you wish to change. As these new patterns become established, you and those around you discover that you are communicating effectively from your clear authentic self.

This CBT technique alone is proven to support a radical positive change that you and others around you can instantly feel. It then follows, that the reactions towards you are more beneficial, and this in turn creates a positive feedback loop where your life, emotions and relationships just get better and better.
practice mindfulness in thailand rehab

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is another technique you will learn how to practice in psychoeducation. This technique trains the mind to gently focus on one thing. This is such a useful technique because it can be applied to every aspect of your life from focusing on a work project to focusing on what your child, partner or friend is saying to you.

Even more importantly, mindfulness trains you to focus on what you are feeling. By promoting self-awareness, mindfulness gives you access to sensations and emotions you have perhaps been unaware of. This awareness gives you the basis of what you need to work with while you are here at the rehab in Thailand, and during your life ahead.

To manage your emotional states, you first need to be aware of them. Training in mindfulness allows you to be ‘present in the moment’. This means that when you are eating your favorite dish or desert, you can be fully there enjoying it, rather than thinking about a work project or other things. And vis-versa, when you are concentrating on a work project, you can be present there also and not thinking about shopping or dinner.

Mindfulness means that you can gain control over unpleasant emotional states caused by intrusive thoughts or rumination. When you are fully in the present these thought patterns cannot gain access. This is the power and usefulness of the training and practice we give you in mindfulness.

Practicing mindfulness creates a culture of mindfulness in your brain and therefore in your experience of life. It is truly life enhancing to be able to enjoy life’s pleasure to the full and be able to recognize subtle emotions and sensations within yourself.

breathwork at rehab

Breath Work

Mind cannot effectively control emotion alone. Since ancient times, cultures around the world have understood that how we breathe affects how we feel.

A simple example is that when we are anxious or stressed, our body responds automatically by releasing adrenaline and we start breathing into our chest area which prepares us to convert oxygen most efficiently if we need to suddenly flee or fight.

Conversely, it has been discovered that if we breathe into our chest when for example there is no cause of anxiety or stress, we nevertheless start to feel anxious and on edge. Thus, these ancient cultures understood that the way we breathe, has an immediate effect on our emotional state.

During psychoeducation you will learn a variety of highly effective breathing techniques that will permit you to quickly control the following emotional states and many more. Cravings, anger, anxiety, fear, depression, insomnia, rumination, intrusive thoughts, lack of focus, overactive mind.

As with everything you learn in psychoeducation, this is not a one size fits all approach. We will guide and support you to find the breathing solution that works best for you.
how to set boundries

Boundaries

In psychoeducation you will learn about ‘boundaries’. Boundaries are invisible psychological fences in our minds that show us where we stop, and others begin. All of us have inner and outer boundaries.

Boundaries that we have for ourselves and boundaries we have for others. Boundaries are really useful to guide us when to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’, as well as in understanding what are ‘our responsibilities’ and what are other people’s responsibilities.

These may seem like things that we understand already but many people struggle with issues of guilt, duty, or shame surrounding decisions regarding personal boundaries and those of others.

Learning about healthy boundaries is often an eye-opener and, in many cases, a huge relief to clients. In the world of addiction, boundaries are incredibly important as they give you among other things, the knowledge and confidence of when and how to say ‘no’ to yourself, and others.

negative thinking training

Negative Thinking

We all suffer from negative thinking sometimes but if you are suffering from addiction, the chances are that you suffer from negative thinking more than most. There are a lot of negativities surrounding addiction, and let’s face it, some addiction is created as an escape away from negative thinking also.

Either way, negative thinking impacts our lives negatively, yet we can use a technique that changes the way our brain operates so that it does not even go down the pathway of negative thoughts but down factual and solution-based ones instead.

You will learn this technique and get to practice it everyday while you are with us at Miracles, creating a whole new way of interacting with life and the world. Not only will negative thought patterns be abated but they are replaced with positively rewarding thought patterns.
cognitive distortions

Cognitive Distortions

The way we see the people and situations in our lives, the way we see ourselves, and the way we think other people see us is not always in line with the reality. This is especially true if we have been through trauma or have been using substances that change the way we see and understand relationships and respond to situations.

Common cognitive distortions could include.
  • Taking things personally.
  • Black and white thinking.
  • Second guessing other’s thoughts and emotions.
  • Conflict is bad,
In psychoeducation we re-examine the beliefs and viewpoints that shape our perspectives around events, people and experiences that are not helping us in life and find ways of looking at situations and responding to them which are both beneficial to us, and to those we interact with.

In gaining clear perspectives you will find balance and be able to act from a point of full awareness of your own minds tendencies yet equipped with the ability to create better outcomes.

In doing so you will be released from the discomfort of trying to match your actions with viewpoints that don’t seem to correspond with yourself at a deeper level. You have the power to choose your perspective and the sense of freedom this brings you is unimaginable until you experience it.
personal values

Values

Our behaviour has become painful for us because it is not in line with who we are. In the psychoeducation sessions you will get to think about your values, “who am I becoming?’

Together with the group you discuss values and attributes, and learn employ psychological techniques to picture, feel and embody those values in yourself, in the here and now. You get to feel it as if it already is!

These extremely powerful techniques have an instantaneous effect. You are instructing your mind at a conscious and subconscious level about who you really are, and the full abundance you have available to you.The mind follows what you give it.

When you tell your mind your highest values and attributes, your mind will embrace them, and they will become you, and the effects of these practices begin to take place in you immediately.

Again, within your body, mind, and spirit, at both a subconscious and conscious level, you are creating the new neural networks that lead you toward your highest values, the person you have always wanted to be.

The Psychology Of Addiction

  1. Why do people become addicted to processes and substances?
  2. What is happening in the brain during addiction?
  3. How does addiction change our thoughts, actions, and feelings?
  4. What is the ‘disease of addiction’?
  5. How does the cycle of addiction come to an end?
All these and many other questions are explored at length, exploding many of the myths and beliefs surrounding addiction using videos and slides alongside professional explanation, personal experiences and discussion.

Unravelling these truths enables you to understand where you are at and where you are going with your recovery. Understanding the physical and psychological nature of addiction puts you in the powerful position of being able to observe it.

The impulses, compulsions and mood states that are caused by the addictive process become visible and understandable to you, which empowers you to deploy the methods we provide you with to manage cravings during the detox period.

The other techniques you learn in your rehab in Thailand, give you the tools and knowledge to defeat addiction, sustainably in the long term.

Conflict Resolution

Each week there is a one hour guided and supervised ‘process group’ meeting where you and all other clients get air any grievances about each other or indeed about Miracles ourselves, in a mature non-violent, non-aggressive way.

During this peer evaluation session you are invited to use techniques you have learned, to raise any issues that may be upsetting or bothering you. It may simply be that someone is eating all the butter, or that the coffee machine is playing up.

We feel that it is important that you have an outlet for feedback and a meeting is so much more sincere than a suggestion box, it offers an excellent opportunity to utilize new skills and consolidate new neural networks.

As with every aspect of your experience at Miracles’ Thailand rehab, this meeting is geared towards your recovery and harmonious integration back into life after you leave us. Some people may struggle with voicing their feelings through fear of conflict, while others struggle with anger management.

These supervised meetings provide a 2-way conversation in a safe environment in which you can practice presenting your thoughts, feelings, and reasoning, politely and assertively in a non-offensive way, where your boundaries and those of others are respected.

These meetings form a template of how to resolve conflicts among friends, family or at the workplace in a manner that leads to the strengthening and enhancing of your relationships, which in turn leads to deeper feelings of happiness and fulfilment within yourself and among the people you communicate with in life.
